If you’ve traveled solo in a beach area, you’ve encountered this before – the water is beckoning and you really want to go for a dip, but you’re worried someone will steal your purse/wallet if you do.

This is not an unreasonable fear – many of the world’s beaches have a serious problem with pickpockets looking for an opportunity. My sister had her money and camera stolen in just this way on a beach in Barcelona.

If possible, you can leave your valuables in your hostel/hotel, but this presents problems if you’re going to be spending the day out and need to have cash, camera, etc. There are solutions though; I’ve perfected a few tricks that will let you enjoy your swim and keep an eye on your valuables.

1.Choose a friendly beach

Before you decide to swim, observe the people on the beach. Are there any solo persons walking around who seem to be observing people’s belongings closely? Is the beach so crowded you won’t be able to tell if someone approaches your stuff? If so, this may not be a good place for solo swimming. However, if it seems to be populated by families and couples and there is enough space to observe people, it is probably all right.

2. Choose a spot close to where you’ll be swimming to leave your belongings.

Always pick an area close to the water’s edge, preferably away from where the majority of people are so it is easier to see if someone approaches your belongings

3. Make sure you have a highly visible blanket or towel.

It can be difficult to see your belongings from the water, so make sure they are visible to you by placing on a towel or blanket. If you’re like me and travel light, I highly recommend using a pocket blanket. I used the Matador Pocket Blanket, which folds out to a large size but folds into a 2 in. square sack and weighs less than a quarter pound.

4. Cover your purse/wallet with your clothes.

It’s always safer to keep your valuables hidden under your clothes so would-be thiefs don’t immediately identify it as a target.

5. Swim only in an area where you can clearly see your belongings at all times.

Choose a swimming area close to where you laid out your stuff. Make sure it is visible from the water.

6. Be alert, but enjoy!

Keep an eye on your belongings and be ready to get out of the water if anyone approaches, but enjoy your swim and try not to stress too much about it. After all, you’re on vacation!
